TURBE OF GÜLBAHAR HATUN

Known to arrive at the Ottoman Palace in 1446, Gülbahar Hatun is thought being of Albanian, Serbian or French origin. She was wife of Fatih Sultan Mehmet and mother of Sultan Bayezid II and Gevherhan Sultan. She moved to Amasya along with Sultan Bayezid II for his service as the provincial governor. Gülbahar Hatun is known to own some foundations in Tokat and Amasya. She came to İstanbul upon Sultan Bayezid II’s accession to the throne in 1481. She has lived as a well-known figure at the palace for eleven years and then was buried at the turbe built for her in the Fatih Complex.

The octagonal planned turbe was constructed of cut stone and covered with a dome. The entrance façade has round arches and consists of straight marble block. The access door was taken into a rectangular jamb. The turbe had been damaged at the 1766 earthquake and was rebuilt in 1767-1768. When got damaged again at the Cibali fire in 1782, it underwent repair upon the order of Sultan Abdülhamid I. The inscribed stone panel of the repair in 1782 was placed above the door. The building is lightened by two rows of windows. The interior is quite simple while the dome was decorated with hand-drawings of the 18th century. In the turbe, Gülbahar Hatun, her daughter Gevherhan Sultan and two other members of the palace were buried.
