THE MOSQUE WITH THREE BALCONIES

The mosque is located in Edirne.It was built upon the writ of Murat II during 1438-1447. According to some sources, it is accepted that Architect Muslihuddin (Architect of Sinan’s master) and Şehâbeddin built it.It is a rare masterpiece with its design.

It is the first sample of the mosques transferred from the plan of “Great Mosques” into central large dome plan. In this way, the most suitable mosque plan was obtained for the mosques in the Turkish Art. The site of the mosque reached an ideal mosque plan by addition of two small domes at the sides in oblique and rectangular shape. The yard of the mosque with its ritual fountain is rectangular and multi-domed. The original pen-carvings on the domes are the oldest patterns seen in Ottoman Mosques. The minaret with three balconies is the highest minaret after Selimiye with its height of 67,62 m. it was built with the mosque at the same time. Climbing up each balcony through different ways has been a pioneer for the minarets of Selimiye. Conqueror Sultan Mehmet built the minaret with two balconies in diamond shape in the eastern side. Ahmet I built the minaret in the northwest in 1610. It has a single gallery The twisted minaret in the west was carved with spiral patterns as seen in Seljuk buildings. Sultan Mustafa Il built it in the 17th century.
