According to Sharia court records, it is understood that this historic masjid was built in 1549 by Fatma Sultan, the sister of the 4th Ottoman Sultan, Yıldırım Bayezid Han. Records also indicate that its maintenance and repairs were overseen for many years by the Sheikh ul-Islam, Esiri Mehmed Efendi.
History
The structure was damaged during the great Bursa earthquake of 1855, but it suffered its most significant blow during the Great Bazaar Fire of 1958. Following the fire, the masjid was completely demolished, shops were built over its site, and the structure remained “lost” for over 65 years.
As part of the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality’s “Khans Area Çarşıbaşı Urban Design Project,” the foundations were unearthed in 2023. The masjid was subsequently rebuilt according to its original design and reopened for worship.
The Tomb of Esiri Mehmed Efendi
Located right next to the masjid is the tomb of Sheikh ul-Islam Esiri Mehmet Efendi, who is known among the local public as “Esir Dede.”
