HACI BESİR AGA SOCIAL COMPLEX

The constructer of the social complex was Hacı Besir Aga who was Darussaadeaga taking charge in the eras of Ahmed III and Mahmud I. the complex was constructed in the middle of 18th century (between 1744-1745). It was understood from the tablet at the entrance door of the mosque that it was comprehensively maintained in the era of Mahmud II. (1826-1839). In Republican era, it was maintained from time to time.
The architect of the building is not known. It could be guessed that Architect Celebi Mustafa Aga who was the chief architect between 1737-1745 had impact on the construction of a crucial complex such as Haci Besir Aga Social Complex.
The social complex is composed of mosque, madrasa, lodge, sebil, stores, two fountains and a part of two storeys that is on the eastern part of the mosque that could be used as primary school or Sultan’s gathering place. The parts, except madrasa and lodge were restorated by The General Directorate of Foundations between January 2008-2010.
The social complex is on a sloping area. The mosque was designed together with the Sultan’s gathering place and library. The yard of the mosque is accessed through Hukumet Konagi Street. Passage to the madrasa is also provided by this yard. The lodge is on the western part of this complex, as a diverse unit. At the northeastern and southeastern facades, there are stores at the bottom elevation of the mosque. The sebilis also at this elevation, at the edge where Alay Koşku Street intersects by Hukumet Konagi Street. Both of the fountains within the complex are on the northeastern facade.
The mosque is located on the southern part of the complex, its interior part has square plan and it is covered by a dome. The narthex has double porticos. Above the door of the sanctuary, there is a taliqcalligraphy tablet. The first portico of the narthex at the side of the yard is composed of three units and it is covered by a cavetto vault. The minaret made of face stone is placed on a square plan base and is on the western part of the narthex, next to the entrance of the madrasa.
