This mosque was built during the reign of Yıldırım Bayezid (1389-1402) for his son, Ertuğrul Bey. Ertuğrul Bey died in 1398 while serving as the governor of the Aydın district. His body was brought to Bursa and buried in the mosque’s cemetery.
Architecture
The mosque is built on a rectangular area. The main prayer hall has a rectangular plan close to a square and includes a portico for latecomers.
History
The structure has undergone several restorations throughout history, documented in 1550, 1860, 1892, and 1954. The mosque’s cemetery contains the marble sarcophagus and tombstone of Ertuğrul Bey.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
The mosque is located within a site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. This site is called “Bursa and Cumalıkızık: The Birthplace of the Ottoman Empire.”
