Çavuşbaşı Mescidi: A Simple Masterpiece by Mimar Sinan

The mosque, designed by Mimar Sinan, is a structure built on the scale of a neighborhood mosque, where simplicity is at the forefront. The original name of the mosque is recorded as “Çavuşbaşı Mescidi.” It is listed as the 186th entry in Tezkiretü’l-Bünyân, the autobiography of Mimar Sinan. It was constructed in H. 979 / 1540–41. There are differing views in historical sources regarding its benefactor (bânî), identifying them as either Mustafa Çavuş or Ümmü Gülsüm Hatun, the daughter of Çivizâd

Architectural Features

Built with roughly hewn stone, the mosque features a wooden roof. The wooden gathering place (mahfil) was added later, and the mihrab (prayer niche) was recently covered with tiles. The minbar (pulpit) commissioned by Ümmü Gülsüm Hatun is still present today.
